The Whitsunday Regional Council is situated at the heart of the Great Barrier Reef. Your opportunity:

This is a hands-on, practical role that supports the operation and maintenance of Council’s water, wastewater, and recycled water treatment facilities. You’ll gain the necessary on-the-job and off-the-job training to perform key functions while learning industry best practices and working with cutting-edge monitoring systems like SCADA.

You’ll be instrumental in ensuring the delivery of clean drinking water and the responsible treatment of wastewater—protecting both public health and the environment.

Key Responsibilities:

• Operate and maintain water and wastewater treatment plants in line with industry standards and manuals.

• Inspect and report on water quality, effluent systems, and maintenance requirements.

• Investigate complaints regarding noise, odours, and non-compliance.

• Support the operational team in the upkeep of pumping stations and distribution systems.

• Monitor and respond to system alarms and emergency situations after hours.

• Collect and analyse water and wastewater samples to optimise plant performance.

• Liaise with stakeholders and manage customer enquiries professionally.

• Maintain accurate records and assist with basic administrative tasks like ordering parts and obtaining 

What we’re looking for:

• A genuine interest in water and wastewater treatment operations.

• A willingness to learn and complete both practical and formal training.

• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

• Basic computer skills and a readiness to learn technical systems like SCADA.

• Flexibility to respond to after-hours issues and travel to various locations as needed.

Essential

• Certificate III in Water Industry Treatment (or willing to obtain)

• C Class Manual Drivers Licence

• General Construction Industry card (White Card)

• High Risk Forklift Licence (or willing to obtain)

• Provide First aid (or willing to obtain)

• CPR/ LVR (or willing to obtain)

• Certificate in Confined Space (or willing to obtain)

• Certificate in working safely with Chlorine gas (or willing to obtain)

• Certificate in Agriculture Chemical Distribution and Control (ACDC)

• Accreditation in Industry Safety cards -Aqua, Brown, Green, Teal, Grey (or willing to obtain)
